If you previously had a health savings account plan or a high-deductible plan through your employer, you may be interested in purchasing a Medicare Supplement High-Deductible Plan F plan, also known as Medigap coverage.
High-Deductible Plan F includes the usual benefits you expect from a regular Medigap Plan F. The key difference is that you manage your health care costs until you reach your yearly deductible. After that, your plan works just like a standard Medigap Plan F. Choosing a high deductible for your plan can help reduce your monthly premiums.

Like other Medicare supplement plans, Medicare pays first when you access any medical services. Under this type of plan, you agree to pay the first $2,490, which is known as your maximum out-of-pocket.
For example, if you had to stay in the hospital, you would bear the costs up to your maximum out-of-pocket. You would pay your Medicare Part A deductible of $1,556. After that, you’ll pay for any out-of-pocket services until you reach the maximum amount of $2,490. Once that’s met, your High-Deductible Plan F covers all of your costs for both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B medical services.
Once you reach the annual deductible, your coverage is the same as the standard Medigap Plan F. So, after you’ve paid the first $2,490 towards your health costs, your benefits include:
Coinsurance and hospital costs (up to an additional 365 days after using your Medicare benefits)
Deductible
Hospice care copayment
Copayments, deductibles, and excess charges
Your first three pints of blood for medical procedures
Coinsurance for care provided in a skilled nursing facility
Foreign travel emergency (up to your plan limits)
You’re eligible for High-Deductible Plan F if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Check your Medicare card under the Part A start date if you can’t remember when you first became eligible. When enrolling, you may have to answer medical questions, but depending on your personal circumstances, you may be able to avoid this.
Some insurance providers use different guidelines to determine which health conditions they accept. Talk to an independent health insurance agent who can help you figure out the right plan for you based on your current health.
Choosing a high deductible health plan can save you a lot of money in health premiums compared to enrolling in a standard Medigap Plan F. But it’s essential to determine what is suitable for your budget and your health needs.
