What is Medigap Plan N?

Medigap Plan N is also known as Medicare Supplement Plan N. It’s a low premium plan where you must pay a small yearly deductible and some copays. Regardless of which insurance provider you choose, Medigap Plan N policies all feature the same benefits and are widely available throughout North Carolina.

We recommend talking to an independent Medigap agent who can assess which type of plan best suits your needs if you’re considering purchasing Medigap Plan N. Our locally based health insurance agents in Raleigh, Charlotte, Durham, and other areas in NC can help with all your insurance coverage questions.

What does Medigap Plan N cover?

If you’re visiting your doctor, Medicare provides complete coverage for your standard preventative care, such as screenings for cancer or diabetes. It also covers annual physicals, vaccines, and other types of tests recommended by your doctor.

In addition, Medigap Plan N provides coverage for any visits to your doctor because of injuries and illnesses. This coverage includes ambulance rides, durable medical equipment, surgeries, lab work, home health, and other services.

Medicare Supplement Plan N provides coverage for the 20% gap that Medicare Part B doesn’t cover. When you’re accessing medical services, Medicare will pay the first 80%, and your health insurance provider pays the remaining amount as part of your Medigap plan. Medigap Plan N also helps to pay for any hospital copays and deductibles. You’ll be required to pay for your Part B excess and deductible and a few minor copays when visiting the ER or your doctor’s office.

Some of the key benefits of Medigap Part N

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance
  • Hospital costs for Medicare Part A (up to an extra 365 days after your Medicare benefits are used)
  • Your Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B copayment
  • Part A hospice care copayment
  • Coinsurance for a skilled nursing facility
  • Your first three pints of blood for any medical procedure
  • Any foreign travel emergency needs (up to your plan limits)

How much does Medigap Plan N cost?

Many Medigap plans offer similar benefits. For example, your Medigap Plan N offers the same benefits as if you purchased Medigap Plan F. The critical difference is you’re responsible for paying for a few items you wouldn’t have to pay for if you bought Plan F.

You need to pay the annual Part B deductible, currently $233 per year. You’re also responsible for paying copayments up to $20 for each doctor appointment. If you need to visit the ER, you’ll need to pay the $50 copay.

Under this type of plan, you’re also required to pay the excess charges to different medical providers. Where providers don’t accept Medicare assignment, they can charge 15% more than what Medicare covers.

If you had Medigap Plan F or Medigap Plan G, these plans would cover this cost, but Plan N does not offer excess coverage. Another way to avoid these excess charges is by checking if your health care providers accept Medicare assignment. If so, they won’t charge you any excess.
