The ABC and Ds of Medicare

You are eligible to enroll 3 months before age 65, the month you turn 65 and 3 months after you turn 65 (you may have to pay a lifetime penalty if you enroll late).

Part A – Hospital Insurance

Government program that covers inpatient care in hostpitals. Covers care provided by a skilled nursing facility, hospice, and home health care.

Part B – Medical Insurance

Government program that aids coverage for services from doctors and health care providers, hospital outatient care, durable medical equipment, and home health care. Also assists costs for outlined preventive services.

Medicare Part C – Medicare Advantage

Includes all benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B, managed by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. Typicall includes Part D coverage.

Annual enrollment and the opportunity to make changes to your plan is October 15th through December 7th of each year.

Medicare Part D – Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

Offers assistance in covering the cost of outpatient prescription drugs, managed by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. May help in lowering your prescription drug costs and help protect against rising costs in the future.

Blue-to-Blue gives every Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) Medicare Supplement member the freedom to switch plans. Members can switch plans at designated times throughout the year. So, current members can always be sure to have the Medicare Supplement plan that best suits their needs and budget.

No matter which Blue Medicare SupplementSM plan you choose, you’re free to select your own Medicare-participating doctor or visit any Medicare-participating hospital. In most cases, your Part A and Part B Medicare claims and supplement claims are handled automatically by Blue Cross NC.

No waiting periods

If you enroll early, you may be eligible for this plan without waiting periods for pre- existing conditions. Pre-existing conditions are conditions for which medical advice was given or treatment was recommended by or received from a physician within six months before the effective date of coverage. If you wait until after the deadline to enroll, you may have a waiting period for pre-existing conditions.

Guaranteed acceptance by enrolling early

You cannot be turned down for Blue Medicare SupplementSM and may not have to complete a medical questionnaire if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are age 65 or older, or under age 65 and are eligible for Medicare due to disability3
  • You enroll within 6 months of enrolling in Medicare PartB
  • You are not covered by certain Medicaid programs
  • You are a resident of NorthCarolina

The Silver&Fit®1 Exercise and Healthy Aging program gives you a low-cost membership, at a fitness facility or exercise center near you. Or, if you like, you can enroll in the Home Fitness Program and work out in the comfort of your own home.
