The ABC and Ds of Medicare

You are eligible to enroll 3 months before age 65, the month you turn 65 and 3 months after you turn 65 (you may have to pay a lifetime penalty if you enroll late).

Part A – Hospital Insurance

Government program that covers inpatient care in hospitals. Covers care provided by a skilled nursing facility, hospice, and home health care.

Part B – Medical Insurance

Government program that aids coverage for services from doctors and health care providers, hospital outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and home health care. Also assists costs for outlined preventive services.

Medicare Part C – Medicare Advantage

Includes all benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B, managed by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. Typically includes Part D coverage.

Annual enrollment and the opportunity to make changes to your plan is October 15th through December 7th of each year.

Medicare Part D – Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

Offers assistance in covering the cost of outpatient prescription drugs, managed by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. May help in lowering your prescription drug costs and help protect against rising costs in the future.

All Blue Medicare Supplement plans feature the freedom to switch Medicare Supplement plans at specific times throughout the year. If your needs or budget change, simply change plans without having to answer additional health questions.4

Guaranteed Acceptance

You cannot be turned down for Blue Medicare Supplement, and may not have to complete a medical questionnaire, if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are age 65 or older, or under age 65 and are eligible for Medicare due to disability5
  • You enroll within six months of enrolling in Medicare Part B
  • You are not covered by certain Medicaid programs
  • You are a resident of North Carolina

No Waiting Periods

If you enroll early, you may be eligible for a Medicare Supplement plan without waiting periods for pre-existing conditions. If you wait until after your deadline to enroll, you may have a waiting period for pre-existing conditions.
