Medigap Plan G covers most Original Medicare gaps, including hospital deductibles, Part B coinsurance/excess charges, skilled nursing, and foreign travel emergencies—except the Part B deductible. It offers strong protection at lower premiums than Plan F.
Turning 65 means you’re eligible for Medicare, but Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers only about 80% of many healthcare services. You’ll receive many offers from insurance companies for supplements and drug plans—here’s why and how to fill the gaps.
Part A (Hospital Insurance)
: Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and home health care. It’s premium-free for most people (if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years/40 quarters).
Part B (Medical Insurance)
: Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and some medical equipment. The standard premium in 2025 is $185/month (higher for high-income individuals). It may be covered if you qualify for assistance (e.g., Medicaid).
Medicare Advantage plans are private alternatives to Original Medicare, approved by Medicare. They bundle Parts A, B, and usually Part D (prescription drugs). Most plans have a $0 monthly premium (beyond Part B), plus extras like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs. You’re responsible for the Part B premium.
Part D plans, offered by private insurers, help cover prescription drug costs. Premiums vary by plan and income. Enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period to avoid a lifetime late penalty (1% of the national base premium per month delayed). If you have creditable coverage (e.g., employer or VA), you can delay without penalty.
Medigap policies fill gaps in Original Medicare, covering copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and more. Plans are standardized (e.g., Plan G offers the same benefits from any insurer—the difference is the premium and extras like gym discounts). You must also enroll in a separate Part D plan for prescriptions.
To get full coverage:
Add a Medigap plan + Part D to Original Medicare, or
Switch to a Medicare Advantage plan (which often includes Part D).
